iPA test Analyzer

Battery portable passive intermodulation analyser.

Kaelus partnered with Designworks to rethink the design and usability case for the iPA, an instrument used to test wireless base station quality. Through a complete design overhaul and extensive user testing, we were able take the system from being outdated and clunky to being the World standard.

Humanising Technology

We set out to create the first battery powered PIM analyzer versatile enough to support multiple test scenarios such as testing at the top of the tower, base of tower, roof top and in-building.

Concept Design

Through both pencil/paper and digital mediums, we explored a wide range of aesthetics for the rugged and IP-54 rated iPA. The design had to consider human factors, usability, safety, and integration of complex electronics systems.

Prototyping

In-house prototyping capabilities allow us to evaluate aesthetic colours and finishes, and to rapidly adapt, test, and validate our designs in the real world.

FEA Analysis

Before committing to a final design and investing in injection mould tooling, we use FEA analysis software to confirm that the parts will be structurally sound and do not have any possible failure points.

Exhaustive Testing

It was crucial that the iPA unit could withstand the elements–and the people–that it would be subjected to. Before it could be released as a viable solution, we had to make sure it would it would be able to endure and still be in perfect working order, even if a ute were to accidentally run it over. It passed with flying colours.

Installing base stations is inherently dangerous. Operating complex equipment while strapped to an antenna makes life difficult for a user. The iPA delivers the safest possible experience for users, not only is the design rugged to withstand the harsh working environment, but includes an innovative user interface allowing remote control using any tablet or smartphone. Workflow is optimised by generating site reports directly from the device.
